Existing Attic Roof Rafter Installation
This is usually the best hot-climate attic method. Stapling Laser Perforated (LP) radiant barrier to the bottom of roof rafters helps block radiant heat before it reaches ductwork, air handlers, and insulation.
Recommended product: Laser Perforated (LP), because most vented attics need vapor to pass through the assembly.
Installation approach
- Pre-measure and cut manageable lengths before working in the attic.
- Staple material perpendicular to the rafters when practical.
- Overlap adjacent runs by about 2 inches or meet seams at rafters.
- Trim around bracing, vents, and obstructions without blocking ventilation.
- Tape is usually not required for standard attic radiant barrier installation.
Choose 17 inch rolls for 16 inch on-center framing, 25.5 inch rolls for 24 inch on-center framing, and wider rolls when access is open enough for faster coverage.
