Radiant Barrier Cost Guide
Radiant barrier cost is driven by roof coverage, roll selection, shipping, access, and whether the work is DIY or professionally installed. A useful budget starts with the actual roof surface, not only the conditioned floor area.
What determines material cost?
- Roof area: Pitch and overhang make the roof surface larger than the house footprint.
- Waste: Cuts around hips, valleys, bracing, vents, and equipment require extra material. The Ra-flect calculator includes 10% waste.
- Roll width: Wider rolls cover open areas quickly, while narrower rolls may reduce labor and handling difficulty in framed attic spaces.
- Product type: Laser Perforated (LP) and Vapor Barrier (VB) serve different moisture-control conditions.
- Shipping: Long rolls are oversized packages, so the delivery destination and package dimensions materially affect freight.
Calculate the roof surface first
A 2,000-square-foot house does not necessarily need only 2,000 square feet of radiant barrier. The roof extends beyond the exterior walls, and slope increases the surface area. The calculator adjusts the house area for roof overhang and pitch, then adds installation waste.
DIY versus professional installation
DIY installation can reduce labor cost when the attic is accessible and the owner can work safely. Professional installation may be the better value when the attic has limited headroom, complex framing, fragile ceilings, electrical hazards, or difficult HVAC obstructions. Ask contractors to identify the intended air space, ventilation path, material type, and total covered area in their proposal.
Build a realistic project budget
- Calculate the required coverage using the house footprint, roof pitch, and overhang.
- Choose the installation method and measure the actual framing spacing.
- Select roll widths that can be handled safely in that space.
- Add the recommended combination to the cart and enter the delivery ZIP code for calculated ground shipping.
- Include normal tools, access equipment, and professional labor if needed.
The calculator recommends an efficient mix of available rolls that meets or exceeds the estimated coverage.
