Radiant Barriers in Hot, Humid Climates

Hot, humid regions combine strong solar roof gain with moisture-sensitive construction. Radiant barrier can be useful, but the material and installation must preserve the attic’s intended ventilation and drying paths.

Safer default: Use Laser Perforated (LP) for most vented attics in hot, humid climates. Choose non-perforated Vapor Barrier (VB) only when a qualified design intentionally requires vapor control at that location.

Why these attics are good candidates

Dark roofing and strong sun can raise roof-deck temperatures well above outdoor air temperature. The hot deck radiates toward attic insulation, ducts, air handlers, and framing. A low-emittance surface facing the attic air space reduces that radiant exchange. The opportunity is often greater when cooling equipment or ducts are located in the attic.

Moisture control still comes first

Radiant barrier should not be used to conceal roof leaks, condensation, wet insulation, or poor ventilation. A non-perforated layer in the wrong part of an assembly can reduce drying potential. Laser perforations provide a path for water vapor while retaining the reflective surfaces needed for radiant performance.

Installation details that matter

Dust and double-sided material

Dust becomes the surface facing the air space and can reduce radiant performance where it settles. With Ra-flect beneath rafters, the downward-facing reflective side remains sheltered and continues to face the attic air space even if some dust reaches the upper side. That is an advantage over a single-sided product whose only reflective face is exposed upward.

Set realistic expectations

Cooling savings vary with climate, roof color and orientation, attic ventilation, duct condition, insulation, HVAC efficiency, and occupant behavior. Radiant barrier is best evaluated as part of the attic system rather than as a guaranteed utility-bill percentage.
